First is the Analysis and Design phase. This phase determines whether development of new software is required and would provide benefit to your organisation. If so, then the features of the software application are determined and the full development project is started.

Just as the software development life cycle is iterative, so too is this part of the cycle. As we progress through the design, additional features, constraints and success criteria may be identified, which will have an impact on other features, constraints and success criteria.
